With this function, IBANs (= International Bank Account Number) stored in a database can be checked for formal correctness. If an IBAN is recognised as incorrect, then this IBAN cannot exist. If this is recognised as correct, then there could be a bank account with this IBAN. But it could also be that this IBAN is currently not assigned.
